Wasp Nest Near Your Home: What's Safe to Do Yourself (and What Isn't)

Not every nest is an emergency — but some situations call for a professional. Here's how to tell the difference before you reach for the spray can.

Species matters more than nest size

Maryland's three most common stinging insects — paper wasps, yellow jackets, and bald-faced hornets — behave very differently and require different responses. Misidentifying the species is one of the most common reasons DIY removal fails dangerously.

Paper wasps

Low–moderate risk

Build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, door frames, and deck rails. Less aggressive unless directly disturbed. Small early-season nests (under 10 cells, no workers yet) can be knocked down at night.

Yellow jackets

High risk

Nest underground or in wall voids. Extremely aggressive when disturbed. Cannot assess nest size from outside. Will sting repeatedly and chase a threat over distance.

Bald-faced hornets

High risk

Build large paper nests in trees, shrubs, and on structures. Highly defensive of a 3-foot perimeter around the nest. Can spray venom toward perceived threats.

When DIY is reasonable

  • Paper wasp nest with fewer than 5 workers, accessible from a distance at night
  • Nest is not near an entrance, play area, or HVAC vent
  • You have no allergy history and a fast exit route
  • You can treat from at least 6 feet away without climbing

When to call a professional

  • Yellow jacket activity at or near your home — nest may be inside a wall void or underground
  • Any nest larger than a softball or with visible population
  • Nest inside the structure — siding, soffit, roof line
  • Anyone in the household has a bee/wasp allergy
  • Multiple nests or repeated new nest formation in the same location
  • Hornets or large wasps near a door, window, or child play area

What happens if you spray and miss

A disturbed but not eliminated yellow jacket or hornet nest will swarm. Workers respond to the alarm pheromone released by threatened colony members — a single failed spray can trigger dozens of stings within seconds. Yellow jackets can also re-enter a treated void at night and re-establish. Professional removal includes treating the nest interior, not just the entrance.
